Vienna with kids
Vienna with kids is easier than most big European capitals. The city is flat, the sights are spread along a handful of underground lines, and children under six ride public transport free. The two best family museums cost nothing for anyone under 19. Schönbrunn alone holds a zoo, a palace, a children's museum and a maze, and can fill a whole day without a single transfer.
More about the city
The catch is the imperial side of the city. The palace rooms and the cathedral are what Vienna is known for, and small children get little from them. Use them as short stops and give the hours to the zoo, the Prater and the museums. From November to mid-March the Prater rides mostly shut, so winter trips lean on the indoor places, of which there are plenty.

Tips by age

- Choose the Children's Museum and maze at Schönbrunn over the state rooms. It is made for ages 3 to 12.

- The Danube Tower slide is for ages 6 and up and at least 110 cm. It costs €5 and closes in rain.
- Agree a number of Prater rides before you go. They cost about €3.50 to €15 each and many take cash only.
- Take the North Tower lift at the cathedral to see the Pummerin, the largest bell in Austria.

Vienna with kids: common questions
Is Vienna stroller-friendly?
Mostly. The city is flat, the zoo is largely barrier-free and the Naturhistorisches Museum, Technisches Museum and Haus der Musik all have lifts. The exceptions are the Haus des Meeres, which bans strollers from three areas, and the Danube Tower, where they stay in the entrance hall.
Do children pay on Vienna public transport?
Not under 6. From 6 until their 15th birthday they pay a reduced fare, and they ride free on Sundays, public holidays and during Vienna school holidays. Carry a document showing the child's date of birth.
Is Schönbrunn Palace worth it with small children?
The state rooms, not really before about eight. It is 75 minutes of audio guide past roped-off furniture. The grounds are another matter: the park is free, and the Children's Museum, the maze and the zoo are all there.
What can we do in Vienna with kids when it rains?
The Technisches Museum and the Naturhistorisches Museum are both free under 19 and big enough for half a day each. Add the Haus des Meeres in the afternoon, a booked session at ZOOM, or the Haus der Musik, which stays open until 10 pm.
