Tokyo with kids
Tokyo with kids is easier than its size suggests. Trains are punctual, the streets are clean and safe, and most of the places in this guide have changing tables and somewhere to feed a baby. The hard part is distance. The sights are spread across a very large city, big stations mean long walks underground, and summer is hot and humid enough to wear out a small child by lunchtime.
So plan by neighbourhood. One area a day, two stops at most, and a park or a boat ride in between. Ueno, Asakusa and the Skytree sit close together and suit younger children. Shibuya, Shinjuku and the bay area are better with older ones. Every activity below has a family card with facts checked against official sources on 4 October 2026.

Tokyo with kids: common questions
Is Tokyo stroller friendly?
Mostly yes. The zoo, aquarium, museums and temple grounds are step-free or have lifts, and several places rent strollers. The exceptions are teamLab Planets, where strollers are left at the door, and Sanrio Puroland on busy days. Bring a carrier too.
How many days do you need in Tokyo with kids?
Three full days cover Ueno, Asakusa with the Skytree, and Shibuya with teamLab Planets at a child's pace. Add a fourth for Tokyo Disneyland or the Harry Potter studio tour. More than two stops a day is too much for under-sixes.
What is free for children in Tokyo?
More than you would expect. Ueno Zoo is free up to elementary school age, the National Museum of Nature and Science up to high school, and Shinjuku Gyoen for 15 and under. Senso-ji is free for everyone, and under-sixes go up the Skytree and Shibuya Sky free.
When is the best time to visit Tokyo with children?
Spring and autumn are the comfortable seasons for walking. Summer is hot and humid, so plan indoor stops like the aquarium and museums for the middle of the day. Many sights, including the zoo, the science museum and Shinjuku Gyoen, close on Mondays.
