Naturhistorisches Museum Wien with kids

This is the big natural history museum on the Ring, and children under 19 get in free. For most families the draw is the dinosaur skeletons and the long halls of mounted animals, which keep a six-year-old walking and pointing for a good hour. The building is grand and old, with a lift and accessible toilets.

Great

Best from about five, and very good value because only the adults pay. Teenagers with any interest in science can spend half a day. Toddlers enjoy the big animals for half an hour, so keep it short with them.

It is a look-and-walk museum more than a hands-on one, so decide in advance which halls you want and leave before anyone melts down. Halls 31 and 32 were closed for renovation when we checked. With a stroller, use the main entrance on Maria-Theresien-Platz, where the visitor service staff help you in. Wednesday is the late day, open until 8 pm.

Tips for the visit

  • It is closed every Tuesday. Plan the Technisches Museum or the zoo for that day.
  • The wheelchair entrance with level access to the lift is at Burgring 7.
  • ZOOM Kindermuseum is across the road in the MuseumsQuartier, so the two fit in one day.
