Tiergarten Schönbrunn (Vienna Zoo) with kids

The zoo sits inside the Schönbrunn palace park and is open every day of the year from 9 am. Children move between the animal houses, the petting zoo with miniature goats and sheep, and a large adventure playground next to it. The zoo itself says mornings are best, because many animals are more active then.

Ages 3 to 10 get a full day out of it and will not want to leave the playground. A baby is fine in the stroller but will sleep through half of it. Teenagers come along happily enough if there are younger siblings.

It is set up for small children. Every toilet block has a changing table, five of the restaurants and cafes have a microwave for baby food, and you can rent a handcart for €5 behind the Hippo House. The zoo describes itself as largely barrier-free. The exception is the path from the upper Tirolergarten entrance, which the zoo calls very steep, so come in through the Hietzing gate.

Tips for the visit

  • Handcarts cost €5 plus a €10 deposit. From November to February they are only out at weekends, public holidays and in Vienna school holidays.
  • Get your ticket stamped at a ticket office if you step out for lunch. Without the stamp you cannot come back in.
  • The panorama train between the Elephant House and the Tirolerhof runs from mid-March to the end of October and saves the climb.
  • Balls, balloons and scooters are not allowed inside, so leave them at the hotel.
