Getting around Vienna with kids

Most family sights are on or near an underground station, and the city is flat. Wiener Linien's own website blocked our checks, so the fare rules below come from VOR, the regional transport association it belongs to, and from the City of Vienna and Vienna Airport pages. Ticket prices are left out for that reason.

Child fares

Children travel free until their 6th birthday, and within Vienna any number of small children can ride with one adult. From 6 until the 15th birthday they pay a reduced fare for single and day tickets. Carry a document that shows the date of birth.

Free days for under-15s

In Vienna, passengers up to the age of 15 ride free on Sundays, on public holidays and during Vienna school holidays. That covers a lot of a family trip in July, August or at Christmas. The same proof of age applies.

Single tickets

A single trip in Vienna is valid for 80 minutes from validation, in one direction, with as many changes as you need. Paper tickets must be stamped in the blue machines before you board. Day passes also exist, and the City of Vienna lists them for 1, 7 and 31 days.

The network

Wiener Linien runs five underground lines, 29 tram lines and more than 130 bus lines. The underground runs all night at weekends and on public holidays. Night buses cover the gap between 0:30 and 5 am on other nights.

Airport by train

Vienna Airport lists the S7 at 25 minutes to Wien Mitte and the Railjet at 15 minutes to Wien Hauptbahnhof, each every 30 minutes. When we checked, the airport was warning that the S7 ran only between the airport and Wien St. Marx and that the City Airport Train was replaced by buses. Railjet trains to Hauptbahnhof were running normally.

Airport bus and taxis

The Vienna Airport Bus reaches Morzinplatz/Schwedenplatz in the centre in 20 minutes and runs around the clock. Children under 15 travel free on the City Airport Train. We found no official page on child seats in Vienna taxis, so if you need one, book a transfer that confirms it in writing.
