Schönbrunn Palace with kids

The Palace Ticket is an audio-guided walk through the whole main floor and takes about 75 minutes. It is room after room of furniture and portraits behind ropes, with no photography allowed. A ten-year-old with headphones will follow it. A four-year-old will be done by the third room.

Worth it from about eight, and better still if the child already knows who Sisi was. Under six it is a long indoor shuffle, so stay outside and use the park, the maze and the zoo instead. Babies in a carrier are no trouble.

What saves the visit for families is everything outside. The park is free and opens at 6:30 am, and the panorama train loops through it with nine stops, including the Gloriette on the hill. If your children are under eight, consider skipping the state rooms and buying tickets for the Children's Museum and the maze, both in the same grounds. The shorter State Apartments ticket is the middle option.

Tips for the visit

  • Buy the ticket online. The official FAQ lists no queueing at the ticket office as the main benefit.
  • The panorama train costs €3 for adults and €2 for ages 3 to 16, paid to the driver, and the rear wagon has a lift for strollers. It runs from mid-March to the end of October.
  • The Classic Pass (€49 adult, €36 child) adds the maze, the Privy Garden, the Orangery Garden and the Gloriette terrace.
  • Dogs are not allowed anywhere in the park or palace.
