Stephansdom (St. Stephen's Cathedral) with kids

The cathedral is in the middle of the old town and entering costs nothing, so it is an easy ten-minute stop on a walk through the centre. Visiting times for tourists are limited around services: Monday to Saturday from 9 to 11:30 am and 1 to 4:30 pm, and on Sundays and holidays only in the afternoon.

A quick look inside is fine at any age and costs nothing. The tower climb suits children from about seven who like stairs. With a toddler, walk in, look up, walk out and go for an ice cream.

The paid parts are what children ask for. The North Tower has a lift up to the Pummerin, the largest bell in Austria. The South Tower is a climb of 343 steps to a room with a view over the city. The catacombs are visited on a guided tour. Ticket prices for these were not listed on the pages we could read, so check at the counter inside.

Tips for the visit

  • Take the North Tower lift with younger children and leave the 343 steps of the South Tower to the over-sevens.
  • The catacombs tour has stairs on the way in and out and is not for strollers.
  • Visiting times change for liturgical reasons, so do not build a tight schedule around it.
