Technisches Museum Wien with kids

Vienna's technology museum is large, close to Schönbrunn and free for anyone under 19. It has two areas made for small children. minTi is for ages 1.5 to 5, with a crane to operate and a fire engine to climb on. miniXplore is an experiment playground for children from three, run in 40-minute slots with limited numbers.

It works for a wider age range than any other museum in the city, from toddlers in minTi to teenagers. Rainy days are what it is for. Expect to spend three hours and still not see everything.

Older children have the rest of the museum, and that is a lot of floor to cover. Lifts reach all six levels and there are accessible toilets on every level but one. The tmw café is on level 2. Bring coins for the lockers by the entrance. It is a ten-minute walk from the nearest underground stations, and trams 52 and 60 stop closer.

Tips for the visit

  • A miniXplore slot can be reserved for €2.50 per person. Leftover slots are given out free at the ticket desk on the day.
  • Lockers by the entrance take one or two euro coins.
  • Discounts such as the Vienna City Card are only applied at the ticket counter, not online.
