Senso-ji Temple with kids

Senso-ji is the oldest temple in Tokyo and the one sight in this list that costs nothing. You walk in through the Kaminarimon gate, down the Nakamise shopping street, through a second gate to the main hall. For children the draw is the giant lantern, the incense smoke and the snack stalls. The religious side passes most of them by.

Great

Older children and teenagers get the most from it, especially if you explain what they are looking at. Younger ones treat it as a short walk with snacks, which is fine. Keep babies in a carrier at busy hours.

Forty-five minutes covers it with small kids, and ninety if you browse. The grounds are flat and there is a lift on the left side of the main hall, so a stroller works. The problem is people. By late morning Nakamise is shoulder to shoulder, which is hard going with a toddler on foot.

Tips for the visit

  • Go straight to the main hall first and do the shopping street on the way out.
  • The Asakusa pier for the Sumida River boats is a short walk away, so the two pair well.
  • Jet-lagged families awake at dawn should use that morning here.
