National Museum of Nature and Science with kids

The museum has two buildings, the Japan Gallery and the Global Gallery. With children under ten, go straight to the Global Gallery for the dinosaur skeletons and the mounted animals, and treat the Japan Gallery as a bonus. English labels are thinner than the Japanese ones, so younger kids will mostly look and point, which is fine.

Great

Best from about six, when the dinosaurs and space exhibits start to mean something. Under-fives get an hour of big skeletons and stuffed animals, which is still a decent hour on a wet day. Babies ride along without trouble.

An hour and a half is enough for a first visit and three hours is the ceiling before everyone fades. There is a nursing station on floor B1 of the Japan Gallery and baby beds on every floor of the Global Gallery. Pair it with the zoo next door only if your children are six or older. For smaller ones, pick one.

Tips for the visit

  • Last admission is 30 minutes before the 5:00 pm closing.
  • Start with the Global Gallery. It holds what children actually came for.
  • It shares Ueno Park with the zoo, so it works as a backup when the weather turns.
