Sumida River cruise with kids

Tokyo Cruise runs water buses from the Asakusa pier down the Sumida River. The classic run goes to Hinode Pier in about 40 minutes, passing under a string of bridges. Other boats continue to Hamarikyu Gardens or Odaiba Seaside Park, which takes about an hour. Children watch the bridges, count the boats and, crucially, sit still.

Three to ten is the sweet spot: long enough to feel like a trip, short enough that nobody gets bored. Babies are happy on a lap. Teenagers will take photos for ten minutes and then look at their phones.

This works best as transport with a view: do Senso-ji in the morning, then ride the boat south and carry on from there. Under-sixes ride free on the standard boats, one per adult. The glass-roofed Himiko and Hotaluna boats have their own fares and rules. Check the operating status on the day, because sailings change with weather and tides.

Tips for the visit

  • A second child aged 1 to 5 with the same adult pays the child fare.
  • The Asakusa to Hamarikyu fare (¥1,180, child ¥470) includes entry to the garden.
  • Asakusa to Odaiba Seaside Park costs ¥2,000 (child ¥1,000) and takes about an hour.
