Ueno Zoo with kids

Ueno Zoo is split into an East Garden and a West Garden, and small children will not manage both in one go. Start at the main gate, do the East Garden while legs are fresh, then decide. The West Garden has the children's zoo and a second gate near the pond, so you can leave from there instead of walking back.

Fine

This is the rare Tokyo sight that works from baby to ten without effort: flat paths, animals at toddler height, cheap. Teenagers will go along with it but will not ask to come back.

Budget two to three hours. Paths are wide and the zoo rents strollers by the day, which helps if you left yours at the hotel. There are three baby rooms with hot water for formula. Weekends get busy from late morning, and the zoo is closed on Mondays, so check the calendar before you promise anything.

Tips for the visit

  • Admission is free on March 20, May 4 and October 1, and those days are packed.
  • Enter at the main gate and leave by the Bentenmon gate in the West Garden to avoid doubling back.
  • Stroller rental is cash only, so carry coins and small notes.
