Rundetaarn (The Round Tower) with kids

The Round Tower is the best short sight in the old centre for small children, because the way up is a wide spiral ramp about 200 metres long. Children run it. At the top of the ramp there are two sets of stairs, a wide wooden one and a narrow winding stone one, before you reach the viewing platform.

Short, cheap and physical, which is what a four-year-old needs between other sights. Hold hands on the last stone staircase. Teenagers get a view and are finished in half an hour.

Prams and pushchairs cannot reach the platform. You park them just after the ticket booth or beside the wooden stairs. There is no lift. Everyone under 18 goes in free and adults pay 60 DKK. The tower limits how many people are inside, but it says the wait rarely goes past 20 minutes. Large bags and suitcases are not allowed.

Tips for the visit

  • Carry babies for the last two staircases. A sling is easier than arms on the winding one.
  • In winter the observatory opens on Monday and Tuesday evenings from 6 to 9 pm.
  • It opens 362 days a year, so it works on days when museums are shut.
