Getting around Copenhagen with kids
The centre is flat and compact, and the metro, S-trains and buses share one ticket system. The rules below come from the Metro, DSB, the city council and the boat operator. Where we could not find an operator page, we left the point out.
- Under-12 fare
- 2 children free per ticketed adult
- Ages 12 to 15
- Own child ticket, about half price
- Airport metro
- Around 15 min to Nørreport on M2
- Metro hours
- 24 hours a day, every 2-3 min by day
- City Pass Small
- Zones 1-4, airport included, 24-120 h
- Canal boats
- No strollers on board, park at the pier
- Public toilets
- Free; 7 staffed sites in the centre
Children ride free
Up to two children under 12 travel free with each ticketed adult on the metro, and DSB states the same rule for its trains and City Pass. Children aged 12 to 15 need their own ticket at roughly half price. From 16 they pay the adult fare.
City Pass
The City Pass gives unlimited rides on buses, trains and metro for 24, 48, 72, 96 or 120 hours. The Small version covers zones 1 to 4, which DSB says includes the trip between the airport and the centre. You buy it in the Rejsebillet app or at station ticket machines.
Airport to the centre
The M2 metro leaves from Terminal 3 and takes around 15 minutes to Nørreport. It runs about every 2 to 3 minutes by day and keeps running through the night. Trains from the airport reach Copenhagen Central Station in around 15 minutes.
The metro never closes
The Copenhagen Metro runs around the clock, every day. At night the M2 comes about every 8 minutes after Fridays and Saturdays and about every 20 minutes on other nights. The Metro homepage shows live lift status, so check it before travelling with a stroller.
Where strollers stop
Stromma does not take strollers, prams or buggies on its canal boats. Rosenborg and Kronborg do not allow them inside, and the National Museum asks you to swap yours for one of theirs. Pack a carrier on those days.
Free public toilets
The city's public toilets are free. Seven are staffed and cleaned after each visit, including Nyhavn, Amagertorv and Rådhuspladsen (9 am to 10:30 pm) and Nørre Voldgade by Nørreport Station (8 am to 10 pm). Many unstaffed ones are locked overnight.
