Rosenborg Castle with kids

Rosenborg is the small Renaissance castle in the King's Garden, and the Treasury is the draw. It is also the least child-proofed sight on this list. The castle has several floors, stairs are the only way up and there is no lift. Pushchairs, prams and carry cots are not allowed inside and stay at the entrance.

Great

Skip it with under-5s. Stairs, glass cases and a no-stroller rule make it hard work. From about 8 the Treasury lands well, and teenagers usually rate it. The garden outside is the better stop for small children.

Backpacks are banned too, and handbags are limited to 15 by 23 by 15 cm. Everything else goes in the free lockers. Tickets are sold in ten-minute time slots and in peak season they sell out, so book ahead. Under-18s are free but still need a ticket. No food or drink inside, though there are picnic tables by the Castle Shop.

Tips for the visit

  • Leave the backpack at the hotel or use the free cloakroom lockers. Suitcases do not fit.
  • Book the first slot of the day and play in the King's Garden afterwards.
  • One adult can wait in the garden with a baby while the other goes in with the older child.
