The Little Mermaid with kids

Every child who has seen the film wants to see her, so here is what to expect. The Little Mermaid is a bronze statue from 1913 by Edvard Eriksen, sitting on a rock in the water at Langelinie. It is free, it is always open, and it is one of the most photographed monuments in the city, which means a crowd along the quay for most of the day.

Go if your child is asking for it, and say beforehand that she is small. Three-to-five-year-olds are often let down after the walk. A baby in a stroller will not mind either way.

The official tourism site puts it a 15-minute walk from Østerport Station. The visit itself takes ten minutes. It makes more sense as part of something else: the canal boats pass her, and the Citadel is close by for a run on the grass. On its own it is a long walk for a short look.

Tips for the visit

  • You see her from the water on the one-hour canal tour, which saves the walk.
  • Combine it with the Citadel nearby so the outing has some running in it.
