Kronborg Castle (Helsingør) with kids

Kronborg is the fortress at Helsingør, the setting of Hamlet and a UNESCO World Heritage site. It is the day trip to pick with school-age children: dark casemates under the castle with the statue of Holger the Dane, and views across the strait to Sweden. The castle lists family activities including interactive stations and ghost hunts.

A strong day out from about 6, and teenagers who have met Hamlet at school get something from it. With under-5s the train plus the stairs is too much. Leave it for a later trip.

Trains on the coastal line from Copenhagen Central take about 46 minutes and run roughly every 20 minutes. From Helsingør Station it is a 10-minute walk along the harbour. Strollers and prams are not allowed inside, and with many stairs and no lift a carrier is the only option for a baby. Restrooms have changing tables and the cloakroom is free.

Tips for the visit

  • A free 15-minute introduction tour runs several times a day.
  • You may eat your own picnic in The Old Kitchens. Café Sundtolden sells drinks and snacks.
  • The Civitatis day trip is a guide only. Train tickets and castle admission are paid separately.
  • Closed on 24, 25 and 31 December.
