Tempelhofer Feld with kids

A former airfield turned into a public park, with the runways left in place. Children cycle, skate and scoot on tarmac wide enough that nobody is in the way, and there is always wind for a kite. Entry is free. The gates open early and close around dusk, on a timetable that changes every month.

Anyone who can ride something with wheels will be happy for two hours, teenagers included. Toddlers run without you worrying about traffic. On a cold windy day it is miserable, so have a backup.

The four main entrances are barrier-free and the ground is flat, so a stroller rolls without effort. There are toilets, snack stands at the three main entrances and an open-air bar near Columbiadamm from April to October. There is almost no shade or shelter, so pick a mild, dry day. Three areas are set aside for barbecues if you want to make an afternoon of it.

Tips for the visit

  • After closing time you can still leave through the revolving gates at the main entrances.
  • Coffee bikes park at the ends of the runways at weekends.
  • Some meadows are fenced off in season to protect nesting skylarks.
  • Dogs must be on a lead outside the three fenced dog areas.
