Natural History Museum with kids

The building alone impresses most children, and the whale skeleton in the main hall gets a reaction from toddlers and teenagers alike. Entry is free. At weekends and in school holidays there can be a queue to get in, and visitors holding a free booked ticket skip it, so book one.

Great

Good at every age and free, so there is no pressure to stay. Babies are happy in the pushchair but get nothing specific from it. From three upwards it is one of the best things in the city.

Do not attempt the whole museum. Choose two zones and stop for food in between. With small children two hours is plenty. Pushchairs are welcome in the galleries, there are lifts, and the Central Entrance on Cromwell Road is step-free with a ramp. If you would rather walk without the buggy, the cloakroom takes pushchairs for £5.

Tips for the visit

  • From South Kensington station, the subway tunnel gives step-free access to the museum's Central Entrance. The station itself is not step-free.
  • Open daily 10:00 to 17:50, last entry 17:30.
  • The paid audio guide sold by resellers is optional. Entry itself costs nothing.
