Great

Children from eleven up find it funny and strange in the right proportions. Six-to-ten-year-olds enjoy the touching more than the history. Under-fives will play with the toys for ten minutes in a crowd.

It works best from about seven, when the idea of a country that no longer exists starts to mean something. The rooms get crowded, and the museum itself recommends coming without a pushchair or with a small buggy. The promenade outside is reached by stairs or a steep ramp. It is open every day from 9 am to 9 pm, which makes it a useful evening slot when everything else has closed.

Tips for the visit

  • Lockers take a €1 or 50 cent coin, which you get back.
  • On 24 and 31 December it closes at 4 pm.
  • The shop sells drinks, sweets and ice cream. There is no cafe mentioned on the site.
  • Use a carrier for a baby at busy times.
