Diana Memorial Playground with kids

This is the best free hour in London for a child under ten. It reopened in August 2026 after a £3 million renewal, with a wooden galleon on a sandy beach, a treehouse with tunnel slides, a water play area and a separate zone with a large sandpit for the youngest.

Great from the moment a child can sit in sand up to about ten. It is the reward that makes a museum morning bearable. Children over 12 are not admitted.

The playground is fenced and staffed. Only adults supervising children up to the age of 12 are let in, which keeps it calm. The downside is capacity. On warm days a queue forms from opening and can last all day, so come at 10:00 or late in the afternoon. The Broad Walk Cafe next door has food, toilets and baby changing.

Tips for the visit

  • Bring a change of clothes. Sand and water play are part of the design.
  • Closing time changes by season, from 15:45 in winter to 19:45 in summer. Last entry is 15 minutes before.
  • Tell staff if you step out and plan to come back, or you may have to queue again.
