Tram 28 with kids

Line 28E is an ordinary Carris tram that happens to run old wooden cars up and down the steepest streets in the city, between Martim Moniz and Campo de Ourique. Children like the bell, the open windows and the walls passing close enough to touch. It is a ride, not a tour: nobody explains anything.

Six-to-ten-year-olds love it. Preschoolers enjoy 20 minutes and then want to get off, which is fine: get off at Estrela for the park. With a baby and a stroller it is more stress than it is worth.

The catch is the crowd. Standing with a small child in a packed tram on a hill is no fun, so board at a terminus and wait for a car where you can sit. Carris publishes no accessibility information for these historic trams. Do not plan on taking an open stroller.

Tips for the visit

  • Load tickets on a card before you board. Paying the driver costs €3.30 per person.
  • Ride towards Campo de Ourique and get off at the Estrela basilica. Jardim da Estrela is across the road.
  • Keep bags closed and in front of you. The tram is crowded and tight.
  • The line is sometimes shortened for works or events, so check the Carris page on the day.
