Pena Palace, Sintra with kids

This is the day trip everyone asks about. You take the train to Sintra, bus 434 up the hill, then walk or ride the transfer from the park gate to the palace. Children like the towers, the terraces and the forest park. The rooms inside are a slow shuffle past furniture.

Great

Teenagers and children from about eight will enjoy it. Six-to-seven-year-olds manage if you keep the visit short. With under-5s the travel, the slopes and the stairs outweigh the palace, and the park-only ticket is the better option.

It is hard going with small children. The gate is 600 metres from the palace, the last ramp is 90 metres at up to 18%, and the interior has many staircases and narrow corridors. Leave the stroller and bring a carrier. Palace tickets are for a fixed date and time, so build in a wide margin for the bus.

Tips for the visit

  • Add the transfer between the gate and the palace: €4.50 return, running every 15 minutes.
  • The family ticket is for members of the same household, and ID can be requested.
  • Private cars are not allowed up to the park. Use the train and bus 434.
  • With small children, buy the park-only ticket and see the palace from the terraces outside.
