Gulbenkian Garden with kids

The garden around the Gulbenkian Foundation is a calm place in the middle of the city: a lake, ducks, winding paths and dense planting. Small children follow the paths and look for birds and fish. It is open every day from sunrise to sunset and costs nothing.

Great with babies and preschoolers who are happy to wander. Older children get bored quickly because running games are not allowed. Take them to Jardim da Estrela.

Know the rules before you go. Ball games, cycling and dogs are not allowed, visitors are asked to keep to the paths, and picnics are limited to snacks at the tables between the lake and the cafeteria. That makes it a good place for a baby to sleep and a poor one for a seven-year-old with energy to burn.

Tips for the visit

  • Eat snacks only at the tables between the lake and the cafeteria.
  • Leave scooters and balls at the hotel.
  • São Sebastião is on both the Blue and Red lines, so it is easy to reach from the zoo or from Oriente.
