Jardim da Estrela with kids

This is where Lisbon families go after school. There are playgrounds, ponds with ducks, swans and geese, peacocks, an old iron bandstand and plenty of shade. A toddler can spend an hour between the ducks and the swings while you sit down with a coffee.

Fine

Ideal from babies to about ten. Teenagers will sit on a bench with a drink, which is also fine. Use it as the rest stop of the day, not as the plan.

It fits well after a morning of sights. Tram 28 stops at the basilica across the road, so ride the tram here and let the children run. It gets busy in the late afternoon and at weekends, which is part of the appeal. Entry is free.

Tips for the visit

  • Combine it with tram 28. The stop is at the basilica opposite the main gate.
  • Picnics are common here, unlike in the Gulbenkian garden.
  • Do not feed the birds bread. There is plenty to watch without it.
