Verdict by age
Not a general rating. How each age band actually experiences it.
From about six, this is one of the best hours in Lisbon. Three-to-five-year-olds like the peacocks and the space but must be held on the walls. With a baby it is a hot uphill walk for a view, and a carrier beats a stroller.
With a stroller you are limited to the accessible route, a levelled path from the turnstiles to the eastern viewpoint. The walls and towers are steps and uneven stone, so a toddler needs a hand the whole time. Skip the museum rooms with under-5s and spend the time outside. The wall-walks and towers close earlier than the rest for safety.
Tips for the visit
- Bring proof of age for children. Free entry up to 12 is validated at the gate.
- Do not let children feed the peacocks. The castle asks visitors to keep their distance.
- March to October it is open until 9 pm, so a late visit is an option on hot days.
