Zaanse Schans windmills with kids

Zaanse Schans is a riverside village of windmills, wooden houses and craft workshops north of the city. The area is freely accessible. You pay only if you go inside mills and museums, either one by one or with the Ticket Zaanse Schans. Children get wind, open space, craft workshops and the inside of a real working mill. Half a day is enough.

Ages 3 to 10 love the scale of the mills and the open space. With a baby it is a windy walk with some awkward bridges. Teenagers are done in an hour, so pair it with lunch.

Bus 800 runs from Amsterdam Centraal in about 24 minutes, every 15 minutes during the day, and stops beside the Zaans Museum. The site is from another era, and the organisers say plainly that access on wheels is limited. Expect narrow paths and bridges with a stroller. Toilets cost €1.

Tips for the visit

  • Go by bus or train, since parking is limited. The nearest station is Zaandijk Zaanse Schans.
  • Decide on the combined ticket only if you want several mills and museums. Walking around costs nothing.
  • Bring coins or a card for the toilets.
  • It is exposed and windy by the river. Pack a layer even in summer.
