Verdict by age
Not a general rating. How each age band actually experiences it.
Children from 8 who have seen the paintings in books get a lot from it, and teenagers often rate it above the Rijksmuseum. Under 6 it is a slow shuffle through crowded rooms. Babies are fine in a buggy, but you will be steering through people.
The catch is the crowd. Tickets exist online only, with a start time, and there is no ticket desk at the door. The museum says visitors spend two to three hours on average including the cafe and shop. With children under 10, plan on half that. Prams and buggies are allowed inside, and the toilets have baby changing facilities. Once you leave you cannot come back in.
Tips for the visit
- Buy only from the museum's own ticket site or a reseller it names. There are no tickets at the door.
- Under-18s are free but still need a ticket with a start time.
- Bags larger than 45 x 25 x 25 cm can be refused at the entrance.
- No re-entry, so use the toilets and the cafe before you walk out.
