NEMO Science Museum with kids

NEMO is the green ship-shaped building in the Oosterdok, and inside it is all buttons, levers and experiments to try. Children run from one experiment to the next and nobody tells them to keep their hands off. The museum says it suits all ages but that some activities are only for visitors aged 6 and over, so a four-year-old will play happily while missing part of it.

Ages 4 to 10 get the most out of it and will not want to leave. Under 4s get in free and can press things, but half the exhibits are above their heads. Teenagers enjoy an hour or two, then drift towards the roof.

Tickets have a start time, yet once inside you can stay as long as you like. Most families last two to four hours before the noise wins. Skip the shop on the way in, and finish on the roof terrace, which has free access by the outside stairs.

Tips for the visit

  • Book the start time online before you go, including for free and pass tickets.
  • Lockers are small and take a 50-cent coin, so travel light.
  • Under-13s must be with an adult. The museum does not let older siblings supervise.
  • Keep the roof terrace for the end. It is free and the city view works as a reward.
