ARTIS Amsterdam Royal Zoo with kids

ARTIS sits in the Plantage district, old trees and brick animal houses on a site small enough that little legs can cover it. Children get close to the animals without long walks between enclosures, and you can bring your own food, which helps with the cost. Strollers are allowed and the zoo describes most of the grounds as accessible on wheels.

Fine

This is the safest pick in the city for children under 6. Babies nap in the stroller under the trees while siblings watch the animals. From 11 up it is pleasant but they will ask what is next.

Give it three to five hours with a lunch stop. The ticket is cheaper online and the price changes by day, so buy before you leave the hotel. Micropia and the Groote Museum next door are separate tickets. With children under 8 the zoo alone is enough for one day.

Tips for the visit

  • Buy online. The gate price is the highest price.
  • ARTIS takes cards only, no cash.
  • You may bring your own food. A packed lunch saves a restaurant bill for the whole family.
  • Trams 7 and 14 stop right at the main entrance.
