Vondelpark with kids

Vondelpark is where you go when everyone has had enough of queues and paintings. It is free and green. There are public play areas, including the Vondeltuin with its large play structure and a playground next to Groot Melkhuis with an outdoor paddling pool for warm days.

Fine

Babies, toddlers and primary-age children all do well here, and it costs nothing. Over 11s need a ball, skates or a bike to stay interested.

Several cafes sit inside the park, so adults can have coffee within sight of the climbing frame. There is also an open-air theatre and a rose garden. The one thing to watch is the main path, which doubles as a fast cycle route. Keep toddlers on the grass side and teach older children to look both ways before crossing it.

Tips for the visit

  • Pair it with the Rijksmuseum or Van Gogh Museum on the same day.
  • Aim for Groot Melkhuis or the Vondeltuin, where the play areas are.
  • Pack swimwear or a change of clothes in summer for the paddling pool.
  • Cross the cycle path at a walk, holding hands.
