Verdict by age
Not a general rating. How each age band actually experiences it.
The museum itself draws the line at 10, and we agree with it. Split up if you have younger children: one adult goes in with the older child while the other takes the little ones along the canal. From 11 it is worth planning the whole trip around.
For a child of 11 or 12 who has read the diary, it is often the part of the trip they remember. Prepare them first. There are many steep stairs, buggies stay in the cloakroom, and photography is not allowed. Tickets are sold only on the museum's website, for a set time, and released every Tuesday at 10:00 for visits six weeks later.
Tips for the visit
- Set an alarm for Tuesday 10:00 Amsterdam time, six weeks before your date. Tickets go fast.
- Tickets are not sold at the door and cannot be exchanged or refunded.
- Only bags up to A4 size go inside.
- Read part of the diary together before the trip. The rooms mean little without it.
