Canal cruise with kids

A canal boat is the one sightseeing hour in Amsterdam where nobody has to walk. The standard cruise lasts about 60 minutes with an audio guide, past the canal houses of the Keizersgracht and Prinsengracht. Children like the low bridges and the houseboats. The commentary is for you.

Ages 6 to 10 enjoy it most and it gives everyone a rest. Toddlers manage about 40 minutes before they want to stand up, so have a snack ready. A baby in a carrier is easy, though you need to plan for the stroller left behind.

The product we link to is run by Lovers Canal Cruises and leaves from docks by Centraal Station, the Anne Frank House and the Rijksmuseum. Strollers cannot be taken on board and are left on the quayside, so bring a carrier for a baby. Most boats have a toilet, but the operator does not guarantee one. An hour is the right length. Avoid the 90-minute and dinner versions with small children.

Tips for the visit

  • Board at Centraal Station if you can. It is the main dock and has the cafe toilets.
  • Getting in means a couple of steps down. Hold small hands.
  • Take a carrier or sling for babies. The stroller does not come along.
  • Use the toilet before boarding.
