Jardin du Luxembourg with kids

This is where Paris families take their own children. Entry to the garden is free. Inside, the paid extras are the ones children want: a playground, swings, a carousel, pony rides, a puppet show and small sailboats to launch on the central pond.

Under-10s are happy here for as long as you let them stay, and it costs little. It is the easiest stop in the city with a baby. Teenagers will sit on a chair by the pond with a snack, which also counts.

The Senate, which runs the garden, lists these as paying activities but does not publish the prices, so we cannot give you a figure. Opening hours change on the 1st and 16th of each month with the daylight. There are free public toilets in chalets around the garden. An hour is enough with a toddler. Allow two with children who want to try everything.

Tips for the visit

  • The garden has ten entrances, all free. Pick the one nearest your route rather than the main gate.
  • Each activity is paid separately on the spot, so decide the budget with the children before you go in.
  • Pair it with the Louvre or the natural history gallery as the outdoor half of the day.
