Vatican Museums and Sistine Chapel with kids

Be honest with yourself about this one. The route to the Sistine Chapel is a long one-way walk through packed galleries, and once you start you cannot easily turn back. A ten-year-old who has seen a picture of the ceiling will be impressed. A four-year-old will see adult legs for two hours.

Great

Great for 11 and up, fine for a prepared 6 to 10 year old on a short route. Skip it with 3 to 5 year olds. A baby in a carrier copes, but the parent carrying will not enjoy it.

What children do like: the Egyptian rooms with mummies, the animal sculptures, the Gallery of Maps and the spiral staircase at the exit. Go straight to two or three of these and skip the rest. The museums welcome strollers and staff point you to lifts, and there are baby changing spaces and a nursing room along the route. Plan two hours and leave before anyone melts down.

Tips for the visit

  • Shoulders and knees must be covered for everyone, children included. Shorts above the knee are refused.
  • The cloakroom is free. Leave big bags there.
  • Silence is enforced in the Sistine Chapel, so explain the ceiling before you walk in.
  • The last Sunday of the month is free, opens 9:00 to 14:00, and has the longest queue of the month.
