Castel Sant'Angelo with kids

For a child this is the castle of the trip. You climb a spiral ramp inside the old Roman tomb, come out onto ramparts with cannons and piles of stone cannonballs, and end on a roof terrace with St Peter's dome straight ahead. Kids can follow the walls round and look for the passage the popes used to escape from the Vatican.

Great

Great from six up: it looks like a castle and you climb all of it. Three to five year olds enjoy the ramparts if you take it slowly. With a baby it is a carrier job and a workout.

The painted papal rooms in the middle hold nobody under twelve for long, so walk through them. The climb is the point. It is uphill all the way on ramps and steps, which is fine from about five and hard work with anyone who needs carrying. Allow an hour and a half, and come down by the bridge with the angels.

Tips for the visit

  • It is closed on Mondays, 25 December and 1 January.
  • The ground-floor route may be diverted while accessibility works are under way.
  • It pairs well with the Vatican on the same day. St Peter's Square is about ten minutes away on foot.
