Bioparco di Roma with kids

The Bioparco sits inside Villa Borghese, so it is green, shaded and a real break from stone and traffic. Small children go straight for the giraffes, elephants, bears and the big cats, and there is a little train, the Bioparco Express, that loops the grounds. A full circuit on foot takes about three hours with stops.

Fine

The best paid activity in Rome for under-6s, and still good up to ten. From eleven it is a pleasant couple of hours and no more.

Two things to know. The Reptile House and a few other areas cannot be entered with a stroller, and strollers are not allowed on the train either, so someone waits outside or you bring a carrier. And animals go indoors before closing: reptiles an hour before, giraffes, elephants and bears thirty minutes before. Arrive in the morning.

Tips for the visit

  • Scooters, bikes, balls and balloons are not allowed inside.
  • Two cafes open on weekdays and four at weekends and holidays.
  • After 26 October it closes at 17:00, with last entry an hour before.
  • A last-minute ticket at the desk in the final two hours costs €9.
