Ostia Antica with kids

If your children are too young for the Forum, bring them here instead. Ostia Antica is Rome's old port town, and you walk its actual streets: a theatre you can climb, shops with mosaic floors, a bar with a marble counter, public toilets with stone seats that every child finds hilarious. It is spread out under pine trees and there is room to run.

Great

Great from six up, and three to five year olds do well here because they can move freely. With a baby it is manageable on the main route but there is little shade on the road in.

The site is large, so do not try to see it all. Walk the main street to the theatre and the square behind it, then turn back. That takes about two hours. The road from the ticket office as far as the museum is wheelchair accessible, which also makes it workable with a stroller. Beyond it the ground is rough. There is a cafe inside.

Tips for the visit

  • Closed on Mondays, 25 December and 1 January.
  • Last entry is one hour before closing.
  • Free for everyone on the first Sunday of the month.
  • Bring water and a hat. Distances inside are long.
