Catacombs of San Callisto with kids

Older children love this. A guide takes you down 50 uneven steps into narrow tunnels cut through soft rock, lined floor to ceiling with empty burial niches. It is about 16 degrees and damp down there all year, so bring a layer even in August. The tour lasts 40 minutes and you cannot wander off on your own.

Great

Great from eleven and good from about eight if your child is not afraid of dark, tight spaces. Skip it with under-6s: no strollers, no carrying space, no way out mid-tour.

It is not for everyone. Strollers are banned, there is no lift and nowhere to sit, and the site itself advises against it for anyone claustrophobic. A nervous six-year-old may hate it. A curious ten-year-old will talk about it for days. Above ground there are quiet lawns and cypress avenues along the Appian Way where everyone can run afterwards.

Tips for the visit

  • Closed every Wednesday, and from 13 January to 10 February 2027.
  • The Appian Way is closed to private cars on public holidays, so take the bus or a tour with transport.
  • It is about 16 °C underground. Bring a jumper.
