Staten Island Ferry with kids

The city's commuter ferry is free and gives children a proper boat ride across New York Harbor. The crossing between Whitehall Terminal in Lower Manhattan and St. George on Staten Island is 5.2 miles and takes about 25 minutes each way. For a three-year-old the boat is the attraction, and the price is right.

From 3 up this is one of the best free hours in the city, and teenagers like it for the photos. A baby will not notice the view, but you get a seat and a rest.

It runs 24 hours a day, every day of the year, with departures every 15 minutes at rush hour and less often in between. Both terminals have escalators and lifts. Allow about an hour and a quarter for the round trip including the wait on the far side. It is also a good plan for the end of a tired day, because everyone gets to sit down.

Tips for the visit

  • Whitehall Terminal is next to South Ferry (1), Whitehall St (R, W) and Bowling Green (4, 5).
  • Anyone who charges you for a Staten Island Ferry ticket is not official. The ride is free.
  • Both terminals have lifts, so you do not need to carry a stroller up to the boarding level.
