Central Park with kids

The park is the best free thing in New York with children and you should plan it as an activity, not as a walk between sights. The south end has the most for small kids in a short distance: Heckscher Playground, the carousel and the zoo. Further north there are lawns, rocks to climb and the model boat pond.

Fine

Works at every age up to about 10 with no effort. Teenagers will enjoy an hour on the rocks or a rowing boat, then want to move on. For babies it is the easiest nap walk in Manhattan.

Do not try to cross all of it on foot with small legs. Pick one section and stay there. Heckscher Playground is the oldest and largest in the park at 1.8 acres, with swings, slides, a climbing maze and a water feature, and it has restrooms that open at 6:30 am. The carousel at mid-park near 65th Street runs daily from 10 am to dusk, weather permitting.

Tips for the visit

  • Heckscher Playground is on the west side between 61st and 63rd Streets, with restrooms in the Heckscher Building open 6:30 am to 9 pm.
  • There are no restrooms at the carousel itself, so go before you queue.
  • The Central Park Zoo restroom is only for zoo visitors. Use the park restrooms if you are not going in.
