American Museum of Natural History with kids

This is the dinosaur museum from the films, and the fossil halls on the fourth floor are the reason most families come. The blue whale hanging in the ocean hall and the animal dioramas hold small children longer than you would expect. It is huge. Choose three or four halls before you go in and accept that you will miss the rest.

From 3 up it is one of the best days in the city, and teenagers still like the space shows and the dinosaurs. A baby is fine in the stroller but will not get much from it. Two to four hours is plenty before everyone fades.

General admission covers the permanent halls. The planetarium show, the butterfly vivarium and the special exhibitions cost extra and need an entry time. Strollers are welcome throughout, there are family restrooms on floors 1 to 4, and the museum has two lactation rooms. The food court on the lower level opens daily from 10:45 am.

Tips for the visit

  • Enter with a stroller through the Rose Center on West 81st Street or the Gilder Center on Columbus Avenue. The Central Park West entrance has steps.
  • The 81 St subway station is stairs only. The nearest station with a lift is 72 St on the 1, 2 and 3.
  • The museum waives the fee for visitors who enter during the last hour of the day.
  • Lockers cost $7 or $12 a day and close at 5 pm.
