Roosevelt Island Tram with kids

New York has a cable car and most visitors never find it. The red tram leaves from East 60th Street and Second Avenue, climbs beside the Queensboro Bridge and comes down on Roosevelt Island a few minutes later. Children get the skyline from the air, and you pay a normal transit fare with the same tap you use on the subway.

A cheap win for ages 3 to 10, who talk about it more than the museums. Babies come along without trouble. Teenagers enjoy it but it is over fast, so add it to something else nearby.

It runs every 7.5 minutes in weekday rush hours and every 15 minutes at other times, from 6 am until 2 am, later on Fridays and Saturdays. The operator says cabins take strollers, wheelchairs and bikes. On the island there is a quiet riverside walk before you ride back, or you can return by subway on the F.

Tips for the visit

  • Stand at the window on the bridge side for the best view on the way out.
  • Use the same card or phone you tap on the subway. The tram takes OMNY.
  • Service is every 15 minutes outside rush hours, so a missed cabin is a short wait.
