New York Aquarium with kids

The aquarium sits right on the Coney Island boardwalk, so it pairs well with the beach in warm months. The shark building is the highlight, with big windows that work for a baby in arms as well as a ten-year-old. Outside there are sea lions and penguins, and a sea lion show in the open-air Aquatheater.

Fine

Good for every age under 11, and one of the few paid sights where a one-year-old gets as much as a sibling. Teenagers will be done in an hour. The travel time is the real cost.

It is a long subway ride from Manhattan, so make a day of it. In peak season you have to park the stroller before going into the indoor exhibits and the Aquatheater. There are accessible restrooms in four places and a family restroom at the end of the shark building. The cafe is on site.

Tips for the visit

  • West 8 St on the F and Q is the closest station. Coney Island-Stillwell Av, two blocks west on Surf Avenue, is the accessible one.
  • The 4-D theater is outside the park, in front of the main entrance.
  • All buildings and exhibits are wheelchair accessible, so the paths are easy with a stroller between buildings.
