Intrepid Museum with kids

A real aircraft carrier moored on the Hudson, with fighter jets parked on the flight deck, the space shuttle Enterprise in its own pavilion and a submarine you can walk through. For a child who likes planes or ships this is the best museum in the city. The museum suggests two to three hours.

Great

Great from about 6, and one of the few museums teenagers ask to stay longer in. Four- and five-year-olds like the planes but may be too short for the submarine. With a baby it is a windy deck and a stroller you cannot park.

Most of the ship is reached by ramp or lift, including the hangar deck and the flight deck. The submarine Growler is different: visitors must be at least 40 inches tall and able to get through the hatch on their own, and strollers and backpacks stay outside. There is no bag or stroller check, so everything stays with you. Most restrooms have baby-changing tables.

Tips for the visit

  • Measure your child before you promise the submarine. The limit is 40 inches.
  • You can bring a packed lunch and eat it on the mess deck or the pier.
  • The Concorde is only open on paid guided tours, not with general admission.
