Brooklyn Bridge Park with kids

This park along the Brooklyn waterfront is where to go when the children need to run and the adults want the view. Pier 6 is the playground end, with a water play area, a big shaded sandpit, a hill of slides and a valley of swings. Pier 1 has a storybook-style playground and Pier 5 has one for toddlers.

Fine

Babies to ten-year-olds are happy here for hours and it costs nothing. Teenagers like the view and the Pier 2 sports courts, then drift. It is the best free afternoon outside Manhattan.

All entrances and paths are accessible, so it is easy with a stroller. Jane's Carousel sits in a glass pavilion near the bridge and costs $4 a ride. Many families walk over the Brooklyn Bridge to get here. With small children take the subway or the NYC Ferry instead and save their legs for the playgrounds.

Tips for the visit

  • Head for Pier 6 with under-eights. The playgrounds there are next to each other.
  • Jane's Carousel is closed on Mondays and Tuesdays in autumn and spring, and also on Wednesdays in winter.
  • NYC Ferry stops at DUMBO/Fulton Ferry and at Pier 6, which saves the walk from the subway.
