Royal Palace of Madrid with kids

Inside, the visit is a fixed route through state rooms: throne room, banqueting hall, royal chapel, then the armoury with its suits of armour made for children and horses. Patrimonio Nacional puts the self-guided route at about 45 minutes. For a 7 to 10 year old the armoury is the part they remember. The rooms before it are look-don't-touch.

Fine

Worth it from about 7, when armour and thrones mean something. Under-5s are bored within ten minutes and you will spend the visit shushing them. Teenagers are fine for the 45 minutes but few ask to go back.

With under-5s we would not pay to go in. The Plaza de la Armería, the Sabatini gardens next door and the view over Casa de Campo give them the palace without the queue. Large backpacks and bags of 40 cm or more must go in the free cloakroom.

Tips for the visit

  • The palace closes for official events at short notice. Check the ticket site the day before.
  • EU and Latin American residents get free entry Monday to Thursday in the last two hours, which also means the longest queues.
  • Combine it with the downhill walk to Madrid Río afterwards, not before.
