El Retiro Park with kids

The Retiro is where Madrid families spend Sunday morning. Children row on the big lake, run between playgrounds of different sizes, and at weekends watch a show at the open-air puppet theatre. The paths are wide and paved, so a stroller rolls everywhere. It is also the natural break between the Prado and lunch.

Works for every age under 11 with no planning at all. Babies nap in the shade, small children have playgrounds, and school-age kids want to row. Teenagers will tolerate it, more so with a boat.

A rowing boat costs €6 on weekdays and €8 at weekends for 45 minutes, per boat, with up to four people. Under-14s need an adult on board. The park is big, so choose one corner. The lake and the playgrounds nearby are enough for two hours. In July and August go early or after six. The middle of the day is too hot.

Tips for the visit

Boats run 10:00 to 14:00 and again from 15:15 until around sunset.
The park opens at 6:00 and closes at 22:00 in winter, midnight from April to September.
The city closes the park in high winds or storms, so have a plan B on rough days.
