Madrid Río with kids

Madrid Río is a long park along the Manzanares, built where a motorway used to run. The tourism office counts 17 play areas, made of logs, ropes and slides, strung along the Salón de Pinos. Children move from one to the next while adults walk beside them. In summer the urban beach area has water jets for cooling off, so pack a swimsuit and a towel.

Fine

The best free hour or two in Madrid for children under 10. Toddlers have low play areas and older ones have the tall slides. Over-11s enjoy it more with a bike or scooter than on foot.

It is flat, which matters in a city with this many slopes. Do not try to walk the whole length. Enter near Príncipe Pío or Pirámides, cover a kilometre or so, and leave. There is little shade on the newer stretches, so in hot months go before eleven or towards evening.

Tips for the visit

  • Watch for cyclists. The main path is shared.
  • Bicycle hire is available along the park.
  • From the Royal Palace it is downhill to the river. Take the metro or bus back up.
